Eating Whiles or Dogs

The U.S. and EU criticize Japan for eating while meat. Furthermore, dog-eating in China and Korea is denounced even by Asians. I believe such an attitude is based on ignorance and bias.
First of all, only the wealthy can say such a thing. People in developing countries where citizens are dying of hunger can’t choose what to eat. In order to survive, they have to eat whatever they can.
And, bias underlies the criticism. What is the difference between the lives of whales and the lives of bulls? Some Americans insist that whales should be protected because whales are beautiful. They never pay attention to ugly creatures! They eat caviar despite sturgeons being on the brink of extinction.
If eating whale is OK, why not eating dogs as well? A proverb says, “When you in Rome, do as the Romans do.” Chinese or Koreans may eat dogs in their countries, but not in Japan nor other countries. Likewise, Japanese should be allowed to eat whale meet in Japan.

Tohya―the site for the Summit 2008

Next year, the G8 Summit will take place at the Windsor Hotel in Tohya, Hokkaido. Now, the local town is getting lots of attention and lots of people are visiting there, including me.
The town is known for Lake Tohya, which has four islands. All four islands together are collectively called “Nakanoshima”. The biggest island is “Nakajima”. Deer were released there 50 years ago and about 150 deer live there now.
In commemoration of the Summit, three-or-more people can hire a motorboat to and from Nakajima for 1.000 yen per person even though an excursion boat ticket usually costs 1,320 yen. A motorboat is so swift and thrilling that you can reach the island in five minutes while a stable pleasure boat takes 25 minutes.
On the island, it takes about a half hour to get to a huge pine tree, which fell during the typhoon in 2004.
I was not interested in the pine tree. My interest was deer. I was told that , at the destination point, I could look down into a valley where deer live, and if I was lucky, I might even come across deer while I was hiking. Unfortunately, I couldn’t see any deer during my trip. In the end, however, I saw three deer near the exit of the hiking road. Two of them approached me. There were ID Tags on their years. The other deer, which didn’t have any ID Tags, stayed away, looking at me. I was happy with the encounter.
In addition, there were two swans at the pier on the island. A staff member was feeding bread to the swans and a school of fish each of which were about 10 inches.
I recommend visiting the West Side of the Usu Volcano. It takes 10 minutes from the lake by car. White smoke is simmering there.
