Food Imports ― frozen dumplings made in China

More than two thousand people complain of dizziness or nausea and at least 175 were sickened by insecticide-tainted frozen dumplings made in China. Rumor has it that Chinese food is dangerous. Nonetheless, the fact is that Japan cannot maintain its food supply without importing Chinese food.

Japan's self-sufficient rate for food is no more than 39%, which is the lowest among the principal developed countries. The Japanese diet cannot be maintained without food imports. Especially, low-income families require cheap Chinese food. Further, most processed foods made in Japan use Chinese growers. Thus, common Japanese can't live without Chinese food.

Most Japanese believe that Chinese food “is” dangerous. However, in terms of the “violation rate”, American food (0.12%) is more tainted than Chinese food (0.09%). Following the 530 Chinese food cases, there were 239 cases of American food violating the Food Hygiene Law during 2006.

This time, serious harm was caused with 10 people falling ill. But, fortunately, no one died. We must make the best of these incidents. Through the investigations, several points came to light. First, there was a delay in the reporting of the initial incident. Swifter reporting could have prevented the subsequent incidents. Second, unlike fresh vegetable and meat, processed foods are not checked for toxins because many kinds of raw materials are used. Third, regarding processed foods made in Japan, the country of origin is not indicated. Disclosure of information is far from sufficient.

A string of food poisoning incidents has awakened us to be more strict about food safety. Food safety is not a given in Japan anymore.
