The Ainu

The Ainu are the native inhabitants of Hokkaido, Japan. Since the Meiji era, Japanese have emigrated into Hokkaido, and 5.8 million people live there now. Some Ainu want to be formally recognized as the original people of Hokkaido. I believe we should allocate the Northern Territory for their autonomous rule when it is returned from Russia. Then, the Ainu could have a proper homeland. As far as Japan is concerned, only the fishing rights to the islands are important and not the islands themselves. I bet, however, that most Ainu will opt for their present lives as Japanese.

Fundamentally, there isn't any discrimination against Ainu. They are honest and don't commit crimes. The situation is totally different from that of Dohwa (Japanese Untouchables ). Ainu get jobs the same as ordinary Japanese and marry ordinary Japanese. As a result, there are hardly any full-blooded Ainu any more. Because of no discrimination, Ainu have assimilated into Japanese society.

Five representatives of the Utari Association, the association of the Ainu, held a press conference to claim their right as the original inhabitants of Hokkaido, but they were all wearing suits and ties, not their customary dress. They don't live their traditional ways any longer.

Nonetheless, some insist that the Ainu are discriminated against. We should be aware that there are people who get rich off of discrimination claims. Without discrimination, they can't get any money. Such people don't really want a discrimination-free society.
