The Media Is No Longer The Fourth Branch

Japan merged Korea in 1910. On the 100th anniversary, leftists and left-leaning media are distorting history. We should no allow them to disseminate their misinformation through the mass media.

At press conference, the leftist Prime Minister Naoto Kan expressed his keen reflection and heartfelt sorrow for Japan’s colonization which brought great loss and suffering. However, different from China or Taiwan, Korea was a part of Japan, not a colony.

In the Japan Empire, Koreans were second-class citizens. Japan had established a draft system. Japanese men were drafted into the army, but Korean men were excluded from the draft. A multitude of Korean men volunteered to become soldiers because, at the time, soldiers were a high-status profession. In addition, after their military service, retired soldiers could become civil servants. Only one in forty-eight Korean applicants could become a soldier.

Left-leaning media reported that Japan deprived Koreans of their names and forced Japanese-style names on them (So-shi, Kai-mei). This is totally false! Koreans wanted to use Japanese-style names, so, the Japanese government permitted them to use such adapted names. The situation is still the same as now. Many Koreans living in Japan are using Japanese-style adapted names (Tsuu-mei) to pretend to be Japanese. The Japanese government should prohibit them from using “Tsuu-mei” and force them to use their real names.

Furthermore, Japan should critically evaluate South Korea’s history. Their history textbooks state that their country has been an independent country since the dawn of history. Such a claim is not supported by the facts. Korea had been dominated by China for thousands of years. In the Shimonoseki Peace Treaty in consequence of the Sino-Japanese War, Japan made China admit Korea’s independence. But, in one and half decades, Korea was merged with Japan, and Korea’s independence from Japan was given by the Allied Powers in the aftermath of World War 2.

Thanks to the Internet, we can fact-check all information and, moreover, disseminate it. The mass media used to be called “The fourth branch of government”, but not any more. It won’t be the fourth branch again until it checks all facts and information carefully.
