Bread-Winning Industries for Japan

Historically, the manufacturing industry has supported the Japanese economy. However, the global economic axis has been changing. Japan should revamp its industrial structure in order to revive itself.

After World War 2, Japanese manufacturers, especially auto-makers, have led the Japanese economy, sustained by the lucrative American market. The manufacturing industry exports to developed countries or produce products abroad. However, manufacturing is seriously affected by external factors, such as financial crisis. In addition, South Korea, Taiwan, and even China are catching up in this field. Japan must diversify its export-led industries.

Now, huge markets are being formed in Asia. The number of affluent people is on the rise. Well-off people can afford to buy high-quality Japanese food. Agriculture is one promising industry. Housewares industries are already thriving. Paper diapers of Unicharm sells well and TOTO toilet seats are catching in Asian countries.

In terms of service quality, Japanese businesses are distinguished. Japanese supermarkets are popular in China. In Shanghai, TV mail-order systems are in fashion, whose accurate delivery system is performed by Sagawa Global Logistics.

The Japanese "fast-food" industry is gaining popularity in Asia. For example, Ajisen Rarmen, which is not a first-rater in Japan, is tremendously popular in China. It has 101 domestic branches whereas there are 417 branches in China. In Shanghai alone, there are 98 branches. In Thailand, Ohtoya, a Japanese eatery chain is popular. It has 38 branches overseas, 20 of which are in Thailand. The foreign branches order one-third of their ingredients from Japan, and offer the same menus as in Japan. Despite the high prices, they are considered fancy restaurants where Thai dine for business, dates or special events.

In specific fields, Japanese makers still have incomparable advantages. For instance, cellphones are composed of Japanese parts. Even though goods are made in China, they are assembled with components which are made in Japan. Electric batteries are made in Japan, the U.S., South Korea, but their component parts are supplied only by Japanese companies.

This year, Japan is going to be surpassed by China in terms of GDP. However, we don't have to be discouraged. As is known, in green areas, Japan tops the world. We have a great chance to re-attain "Japan As No.1".
